Sciatica Treatment -

Sciatica Treatment provides you with a handful of options to choose from.

Sciatica is a major frustration for millions of people every year. If you’re going to treat it correctly you must understand sciatica is a symptom of an underlying problem and not solely a condition. There is good news, which is that we start with this truth when treating sciatica. The bad news, however, is that numerous physicians mistakenly focus on treating the condition rather than focusing on the underlying cause. This is a bad sciatica treatment practice.

A typical first therapy option in a sciatica treatment program is non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs. This would include drugs like Ibuprofen, or even stronger drugs such as Vicodin or Oxycontin. There is a problem with treating sciatic along this method. Instead of focusing on the origin of the pain it only proves to mask it.

This method would be like a dentist who chooses not to focus on the cause of your tooth pain, but rather chooses to simply give you a Novocain injection to mask the pain. Inevitably, three or four hours later the pain only returns. Too many times this is seen as an appropriate treatment. For this reason it’s important to ensure the upfront diagnosis is accurate. This means understanding why the sciatic nerve is being irritated to begin with.

Sciatica occurs because of only a small number of reasons. Dry disc disease or degenerative disc disease is a common reason. The numbers represent the fact that 85% of adults under the age of 55 experience sciatica.

In this condition, the center portion of the disc looses fluid over time due to trauma, hard work, age and even gravity. When this happens, an area called the neural foramina (where the nerve exits from the spinal cord) gets smaller in diameter resulting in a condition called foramina stenosis.

At the 4th and 5th lumbar vertebrae in the lower back region is where the large sciatic nerve exits. The sciatic nerve is very sensitive and will cause a patient pain when something as small as the weight of a dime presses against it. Symptoms of sciatica will frequently reveal themselves when disc fluid is lost and when there are disc herniations or
protrusions.

No matter how much medication you take, no matter how much physical therapy treatments you participate in, no matter how many chiropractic treatments you get… nothing will relieve the pain until you get to the cause, that being the degenerative disc or herniated disc disease.

Sciatica Treatment has placed too much emphasis on symptoms. More emphasis needs to be placed on the actual condition that causes sciatica. Sciatica sufferers are only going to continue suffering in pain if this treatment practice is continued. Often this frustration stems from wondering when this problem will finally go away, not realizing that it is virtually impossible to get well until you can get down to the cause of the problem. By keeping this in mind when treatment options are explained to you it is certain to ensure a more satisfying and effective result.
