Herniated Disc Symptom - Typical Symptoms and Therapies

symptoms of a back disc can be very serious, and can result in quite a bit of disability. This article will talk about the most common symptoms associated with a bulging disc in each region of the back, as well as a few tips for what you can do at home for relief.

But before we talk about the symptoms, we need to first have an understanding of how a bulging disc causes pain. The discs of the spine are cushions that separate each set of bones in the back. They are shock-absorbers, and they are each made up of two main parts – a strong outer covering called the annulus, and a soft jelly center called the nucleus.

If you take a close look at the back, what you will see is that the spinal nerves are located directly behind each disc. These nerves are very significant, because they control everything in the body.

When a disc bulges, the outer covering of the disc tears, and the jelly begins to shift from the center of the disc, into the region where the disc has been damaged. This results in a bulge in the disc, and unfortunately, the disc will usually bulge right where the nerve is located.

This causes pressure to be applied to the affected nerve, which is actually what causes most of the symptoms associated with a bulging disc.

In fact, one interesting fact about the discs of the spine is that they do not have the ability to feel pain sensations – in other words, even if the disc is damaged, you can’t feel it. This makes sense when you consider that the discs are absorbing shock all day long – if you could feel this, you would be in pain all day!

So, the question is – if this is true, why can this condition cause so much pain? Well, the answer is because the nerves are affected – the aggravated nerve is actually what causes all of the symptoms.

With this in mind, let’s talk about the most common symptoms of a back disc that can occur in each region of the spine. Let’s begin with the neck, and work our way down.

A bulging disc in the cervical spine (neck) will usually cause symptoms such as neck pain and/or stiffness, headaches, shoulder, arm and hand pain (which may be experienced as sharp pain, burning, stabbing, numbness, or a pins and needles sensation), dizziness, ringing in the ears, blurred vision, thyroid problems (which can result in weight problems), chest pains, and even heart palpitations (a feeling that your heart is pumping strongly in your chest).

This is a perfect example of what I was mentioning earlier – as you can see, these symptoms can involve much more than neck pain. The reason for this is because these body areas are controlled by the nerves in the neck, and pressure on a cervical nerve from a bulging disc will cause these parts of the body to malfunction.

The most common bulging disc symptoms for a thoracic disc (mid-back) are mid-back pain, shoulder, arm and hand pain (same as in the neck – the type of pain can vary), radiating pain around the rib cage, chest pain, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, neck pain and tension, headaches, and digestive problems (the nerves in the thoracic region of the spine control the gall bladder, which is a very important organ involved with digestion).

In the lumbar region (low back), the most common symptoms are low back pain and weakness, pain radiating down the leg (this pain can be a sharp pain, burning, stabbing, pins and needles, or numbness), leg weakness, knee pain, problems with the bowel or bladder, and sexual organ dysfunction.

So, when these symptoms occur, what can you do to relieve them? Unfortunately, most of the therapies doctors usually recommend are not as effective as most would like them to be. They may provide temporary relief, but long term relief is not common with the typical treatments.

Most doctors will recommend medications (usually pain relievers and muscle relaxers), pain injections (such as cortisone and epidurals), physical therapy, and surgery (as a last resort, usually). The reason these therapies do not usually provide long term relief is that they are primarily focused on numbing the affected nerve.

This may sound good on the surface, but if you do not address the cause of the problem (the bulging disc), the pain will inevitably return.

After working with thousands of individuals who suffer with this condition, I’ve found that there are actually a number of therapies that do address the disc itself, and a combination of these therapies are usually most effective at providing results.

In addition to this, there are a few things you can do at home for relief from bulging disc symptoms. The most common mistake I see people make with this condition is that they want to use heat for relief.

This is actually the worst thing you can do – ice is always the best option when you are experiencing pain. Ice will numb the nerve, and reduce the inflammation in the problem area. Heat, on the other hand, will just aggravate the nerve and cause additional swelling around the nerve, which causes the pain to last longer than it needs to.

When using ice, apply it over the injured disc for 15 minutes, and wait at least an hour before you apply it again. You will need to repeat the treatment multiple times for the best results, and if you’re in a lot of pain, expect to use the ice consistently for at least 3 days before you experience considerable relief.

Optimum Health is Dependant on Ionic Minerals

Over seventy Ionic Minerals are needed by every single cell of our bodies for peak performance and healthy living. Recently, however, scientists are proving that our soils are becoming more and more unable to supply the necessaryIonic Minerals because of inadequate farming methods. Soils are becoming depleted of the necessary minerals to supply our needs. Fruits and vegetables now have less and less of the 70 plus minerals that we need for the proper functioning of our bodies. Our bodies need minerals for the make up of our bodies’ precious fluids, the formation of blood and bone cells, and for maintaining the nervous system. Mental and physical problems can result if there is a deficiency of one single mineral in the body. It is important, therefore, to educate ourselves as to the nutritional value of every type of food, and to ensure that we are getting the correct foods to provide optimum health.
If depleted soils are brought into their proper mineral balance, many of the dangerous deficiencies that we suffer today would be eliminated. Many of us I am sure, need some form of mineral supplementation that would supply us with all the necessary minerals for the body’s optimal performance. It is alarming that fruits, vegetables and grains now being supplied, no longer contain enough of the essential minerals, for a deficiency in any one of the more important minerals can actually result in disease. It is certainly difficult to consume enought fruits and vegetables to supply ourselves with the essential mineral salts that our bodies cry for. Our physical well-being is more directly dependent upon the minerals we take into our systems than upon calories or vitamins, or upon the proportions of starch, protein or carbohydrates we consume. In fact, lacking vitamins, the system can make use of minerals, but lacking minerals, vitamins are useless.
Looking at fruits and vegetables at a grocery store, they don’t look any different from the ones displayed in the organic section. But certainly the organic section is by far different from the ordinary one in terms of providing the necessary minerals. One fruit may look exactly like another, but could be quite different in composition of nutrients that particular fruit is supposed to contain. Laboratory tests show that fruits, vegetables, grains, eggs, milk and the meats of today are not what they were a few generations ago. Eating organic fruits and vegetables is strongly advised, as factory farmed foods are very deficient in nutrients.
Minerals are vitally important to the diet, for the prevention of numerous diseases. A diet must consist of not merely calories, vitamins, protein, starches and carbohydrates, but it must contain minerals as well. Remember that lacking vitamins the system can use minerals, but lacking minerals vitamins are useless, for vitamins control the appropriation of minerals, and in the absence of minerals vitamins have no function to perform.
Trace elements are minerals that the body requires in amounts of 100 mg, or less a day. Although the body needs only small amounts of trace minerals insufficient intake can seriously impair health.
Important trace elements to bear in mind are Chromium, Copper, Iodine, Iron, Manganese, Molybdenum, Selenium, and Zinc.
Chromium enables the body to burn sugar, providing energy while preventing damage to blood vessels and organs. Iodine is used by the thyroid gland to produce hormones essential for growth, reproduction, nerve and bone formation and mental health. Manganese is an antioxidant and plays an important role in chemical reactions involving energy production, nerve cell metabolism, muscle contraction and bone growth. Copper is necessary for the formation of blood cells and connective tissue. It is also involved in producing the skin pigment melanin. Iron produces haemoglobin the protein that carries oxygen throughout the body. It is also involved in the production of certain hormones, connective tissue and brain neurotransmitters and immune system maintenance. Molybdenum, is also an antioxidant and helps the body remain healthy by detoxifying sulphites and sulfur compounds. Selenium may help prevent some forms of cancer and heart disease, and also helps to boost the immune system. Zinc is involved in the structure and function of all cell membranes as well as the production of more than 200 enzymes. It is also involved in proper wound healing.
